| Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) |
The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) is a treasure of the early Christian Church that was revived by the bishops at the Second Vatican Council.
It is a formation process for individuals who wish to become members of Christ's body in the Roman Catholic tradition. The process takes place within the context of local parish life, as the candidates (catechumens) engage in prayer, worship, catechesis, recreation, fellowship and the general activities of the local parish community with its variety of ministries.
The RCIA process has been designed to be a journey of initiation in the midst of the parish community. Those seeking Baptism, Confirmation or Reception into the Church are invited to experience the community at worship, to be aware that the parish is praying for them and to journey in a deeper way with some members of the parish RCIA team, in reflection, learning and exploration of the faith.
RCIA is not a fixed programme, but a flexible process built around the needs of the presenting candidate or catechumen. The RCIA stresses that conversion is begun by the Holy Spirit and is an extended process. The desire that a person exhibits for becoming a Christian is a response to what the Spirit has already begun and is seen in the context of a journey into faith.
Ashley Pringle is the RCIA Co-ordinator in the Parish and is also a member of the North American Forum on the Catechumenate and can be contacted through the Parish Office. Further details may be obtained from the Priests of the Parish.
