PARISH MISSION STATEMENT

WE, THE PARISHIONERS OF RATHMINES, ASPIRE TO WORK FOR THE KINGDOM OF GOD BY BUILDING A CARING AND INCLUSIVE COMMUNITY OF FAITH, REACHING OUT TO AND WELCOMING EVERYONE WE MEET IN CHRISTIAN FRIENDSHIP, LOVE AND SERVICE

Sunday, 29thAugust 2010  22nd Sunday in Ordinary Time

There is nothing more off putting than false humility. There can be a mistaken belief that there is virtue in continually putting oneself down. Real humility, as today’s readings suggest, comes from an appreciation that our dignity lies not in our abilities, successes or status, but in the fact that we are loved into and sustained in existence by a loving God, ‘with the whole Church, where everyone is a first-born child and a citizen of heaven’.

We are not the sum of our weaknesses and failures; we are the sum of the Father’s love for us and our real capacity to become the image of his Son. from Safely Through the Storm

We extend our sympathies to the family, friends and colleagues of Jane O’ Connor, a special needs assistant at St Louis Infant School, who died suddenly while on holiday with her family last week.

Back to school!! St Louis Infant and St Louis Senior Primary schools reopen on Tuesday 31st August.

Ecumenical mid-day prayer and lunch.  Monday 30th August sees the launch of a regular (ie: monthly) gathering with Christians from the different denominations in our area for short midday prayer and lunch. The idea is that the shared ‘prayer cum lunch’ would move around the different congregations as is practicable. The first gathering is at St. Finian’s Lutheran church, Adelaide Road at 1pm Mon 30th Aug. All welcome, please contact the parish office if you are planning to go, so that caterers have an idea of numbers attending.

The National Maternity Hospital are having their Annual Remembrance Service on Sunday 5th September 2010 at 3pm in St. For further information contact the Chaplaincy at 6373121

New memorial plaques for the pews! You will be aware that there is currently one plaque on each of the pews in the church. Following several requests in recent years, the Pastoral Council has decided to allow two new plaques be added to each seat, one on either side of the present plaque, mid-way along the seat. We will allocate these on a first come first served basis, starting in the front row. The purpose of the plaque is to allow a deceased loved one to be remembered and prayed for. The charge will be €400 to have the plaque fitted with the appropriate wording.  For further details and payment, contact Geraldine in the parish office.

Following our very successful excursion to Wexford last year, we are planning a Parish Day Trip to historic Kilkenny City on Sat 25th Sept together with the Church of Ireland parishes of Holy Trinity Rathmines and St. Philips, Sandford Road.

We will visit St. Canice’s Cathedral, the Black Abbey and Kilkenny Castle.

Cost €25 includes return coach fare + entrances to centres. Places limited, so booking with full payment required by 5th Sept. Please leave payment in envelope with your name, address & telephone number printed clearly in Parish Office for the attention of Geraldine.

Meeting of the Parish Pastoral Council takes place Tuesday 31st Aug at 7pm.

A meeting of the Family Mass Committee will take place Thurs 2nd September at 8.15pm Parish
